Parent Involvement: Caveats amd Concerns

| RTI Practices | Caveats and Concerns | School Examples | Resources |

School-based examples of parent involvement, such as those presented in the School Examples section, are "real world" examples that represent current practices considered by most staff in their sites as "works in progress." In contrast, research studies may present a different picture of parent involvement standards (see Research Examples). Schools considering adopting a responsiveness-to-intervention model should consider the following points related to parent involvement in the process.

When a school undertakes implementation of an RTI process, it is an excellent time to review the school's policies on parental due process issues (i.e., the timing of parental involvement and when notices should be provided). It is vital that these standards and policies be formalized in writing so that professional staff members can refer to the information. It is good practice to consistently involve parents in discussions about their child's response to instruction and the school's overall goal to improve learning outcomes.
